Collection: Handmade Pottery Button From Japan

About me.

I born in Shizuoka, Japan 1986.
2006 Studied for a year at the Camberwell College of Art, University of the Arts London
2010 Completed two-year training at the Tochigi Ceramics Technical Support Center.

Mashiko town is one of the famous pottery production areas in Japan. Compared to other production areas, it has the shortest history, but it is popular because it is close to Tokyo.

I started making buttons when I searched for nice buttons for my mother, who is good at knitting.  So my buttons go well with knits and wool.

In my work, I use two types of clay: traditional Mashiko clay and semi-porcelain clay.
Semi-porcelain is strong and white, so the color of the glaze is good.
Mashiko clay is a bit rough, but I like it because it gives good color and nice texture.

The right side of the photo is semi-porcelain clay, and the left side is Mashiko clay.  Even with the same glaze, it's fun to see different colors depending on the clay.

Another thing to watch out for is the button hole.
The front and back of the button holes are sanded and the corners are rounded so that the thread will not be damaged when using the button. It's an unnoticeable task, but very important.

I also make my own glazes from various raw materials.
